She's Got Her Father's Eyes

Father s EyesNora Grace, my second grandchild, was born Thursday morning. My reaction to the first picture Junior sent us was, “She looks like Brock!” But then, Brock and Junior are brothers. Junior texted us saying that she has Nicole’s chin and lips. And then my wife Linda responded, “But she has her father’s eyes."She has her father’s eyes.Nora Grace 2It reminded me of a song that Gary Chapman wrote for Amy Grant back in the 80’s, “Father’s Eyes.”

I may not be every mother's dream for her little girl,And my face may not grace the mind of everyone in the world. But that's all right, as long as I can have one wish I pray:When people look inside my life,I want to hear them say,She's got her father's eyes.

Of course, the song was referring to the Heavenly Father, and I loved the message. Honestly, that’s my prayer for every one of us. That we see the world and everything in it from our Heavenly Father’s perspective. That when people look at us, they can see the Father because of Jesus in us. That we would have his likeness, and his values, his perspective. That we would love the things he loves and repudiate the things he hates.I do get pleasure when I see characteristics in my kids that they got from their mother or me. And I often say things like, “You kids got your brains from your mother because I still have mine.” And then I duck – hahaha! But my prayer is not that my kids be like me or Linda, or that my grandkids be like their mom or dad. My prayer is that they all be like Jesus, and that the world will see God and his compassion, his grace, his passion for righteousness, his forgiveness, his sacrificial love... through them. I pray that way for you as well.I want Nora to know her heavenly Father and for her to have his eyes. And I pray that she gets that from me.
