The Voice Inside Your Head

“My mom’s been gone for over ten years, but every time I make a decision I hear her voice in my head, approving or disapproving. It’s like I’m still living to please her."

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that statement with some variables. Sometimes it’s, “Dad.” Sometimes it’s a first boss, a teacher, even a pastor. But most of us have someone in mind who still affects our thinking in a powerful way. Someone who influenced us so much in our formative years, that though they may no longer be around, we still unconsciously do things to please them.

I don’t think that’s altogether bad, if it’s a wise person who serves as a helpful guide, and their past opinions do not rule us. There are multiple mentors from my past that echo in my brain when I’m pondering decisions. I appreciate the wisdom they left for me.

But I want to be careful that I do not live, work, serve, or speak to please other people, whether it's those from the past or the present. And that’s a danger for all of us.

I love these words of Paul to the Thessalonians, "Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts” (2 Thessalonians 2:4 NLT).

God didn’t make you to be who your mom or dad wanted you to be. He didn’t make you to be what your boyfriend or wife, boss, or teacher wants you to be. God made you to be uniquely created to please, honor, and glorify Him in ways that no one else can. He wants to be the prevailing voice in your head. Because He designed you and created you, He knows more about you and how you will thrive in this life (and the next) than anyone else, including yourself.

Get to know the Bible so well that God’s word is that voice in your head. His way of thinking should take precedence over your mom’s, your dad’s, or even that wise mentor’s. All those other voices may tell you good things, but they’re also going to lead you astray. God’s Word, however, will never fail you. It will always direct you well.

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105 NLT).
