Just Talk To Him

At dinner time when our kids were little, we would take turns praying before eating. It was 5-year-old Brock’s turn to pray. When Brock prayed, he never prayed only for the food. I tend to get right to the point, thank God for the food, say “Amen,” and we start eating. Brock, however, liked to talk to God.

He said, “God, thank you for Mommy making this food. Please help Edna (an older lady in our church) to feel better. And help me so it’s nice outside so I can play with my friends. And I don’t think you know about this yet, well, I don’t think you know but maybe somebody told you but I tipped over on my bike and hurt my leg. Well, maybe my knee or part of my leg. So if you don’t know about that I wanted to tell you so you can make it better.”

Do you think God thought, “How dare you speak blasphemy! Of course I know all about that! I know about everything!”

No. How do you think God responded? Probably with the same smile and affection for him that I felt.

We do not have to inform God of any crisis, tragedy, need, or even heartfelt desires in our lives. But He loves to hear us tell Him.

And truthfully, I wonder if God wants to sometimes tell us, “Just talk to me, please. It’s what I created you for! Don’t change your voice. Don’t change your language. Just talk normal. Tell me what’s on your mind. Ask me for help with your daily struggles. I’ll give you wisdom for making decisions if you just ask. But talk to me!”

He wants you to tell Him why work has been rough lately. He wants you to lean on Him for help with your marriage and raising kids. He wants to help you with the class that you’re having trouble with. And He wants to hear that you love Him and trust Him no matter what happens in your life.

We come to the Father in the name of Jesus…Jesus fully experienced what it was like to be human and live a difficult life. And that is all the more reason for us to constantly go to Him, talk to Him, and ask Him for help.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:15–16 NIV).
